Kaoru Akagawa
Born in Canada, grew up in the U.S. and Japan, since 2007 in Berlin, and since 2017 in London. With her globe-trotting background she challenges to cross the borders between many different things like “Countries, Religions, Languages, Cultures, etc”.
She also tries to revive ancient traditional Japanese syllabary, Kana. They are representative of a leisurely and creative pursuit, but no longer used in day-to-day life in contemporary Japan due to their complexity and the difficulty of passing down and acquiring the necessary skills.
By using Kana in her contemporary work, Akagawa attempts to build a bridge beyond time and space.
